“We don’t know whether things are getting better or worse climatewise. It has been so dry and too hot for the last one and a half months. I wish I was in Nijmegen. There is so much dust here and many kids are coughing. There is no idea when the rains will fall. Despite all these I have been busy ploughing the farm with the tractors we hired from the District Agricultural Department. We have prepared all the five acres of land. It is now ready waiting for planting when the rains starts.
January is always a heavy month in Kenya. Children change schools and parents run from one school to another looking for new admissions. The Social worker and I have been moving so much. Yesterday I said that I would sit down this week-end and send you a long note and today comes your letter!”
Ook in Kenia heeft men al een aantal jaren last van de veranderingen in het klimaat. Het land kent jaarlijks twee regenperiodes, waarin elke avond rond dezelfde tijd enorme stortbuien vallen. De laatste jaren blijven de regens echter vaak te lang uit of komen helemaal niet. Als het dan eindelijk weer gaat regenen, is de aarde ondertussen zodanig uitgedroogd, dat zij het water van de enorme hoosbuien nauwelijks kan verwerken. De vruchtbare bovenlaag van de aarde spoelt dan weg met het regenwater en overal ontstaan overstromingen.
